“Fishing After Dark” with Frank Landis

This presentation will focus on targeting predatory brown trout at night. Frank works as a guide for Relentless Fly Fishing and TCO Fly Shop and has spent countless hours in the pursuit of catching trout at night. Frank lives in Carlisle, PA and also works as a middle school teacher full time. He is an active member of Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited. During the presentation, Frank will delve into everything you need to know about the night game, including tactics, equipment, flies, conditions and some things to remember when tackling a trout stream at night. Night fishing is not something everyone will want to do, but it seems to be something that everyone is interested in hearing about. At night, all of the rules change and often that’s when the biggest fish come out to play. Frank will bring together some night fishing ideas and concepts that are proven around the country for targeting brown trout across the country.

Join us for the Spring Creek Chapter TU's 2026 Annual Fundraiser and Awards Dinner on Saturday, Mar 21, at 5:30 PM at the Church of the Good Shepherd Social Hall in Port Matilda. In addition to socializing and reconnecting with old friends, take time to explore the exciting raffles and auction prizes, and enjoy some snacks, free wine, and beer. The locally based Bonfire Old Fashioned BBQ will cater the event this year. Their buffet dinner will commence around 7:00 PM, followed by the awards program, live auction, and drawings, starting after dessert at approximately 8:00 PM and concluding by 9:00 PM. If you haven't been to this venue before, please enter through one of the main entrances on either the east or west side and look for our registration table.

Register Here

Please take advantage of the discounted early registration tickets and register by March 1st. We will have tables of eight. If a group of eight or fewer wishes to sit together, the best option is for one person to sign up for all the tickets and list the other members as guests. Alternatively, each individual or couple in the group can purchase their tickets separately and indicate in the comments whom they would like to sit with. We will do our best to accommodate all seating requests.

Similar to last year, we will conduct our silent auctions and sweepstakes online. The live auction, bucket raffles, and other drawings will continue to be in person. Although the silent auction bidding will be online, you will be able to collect your auction winnings at the end of the evening. Sweepstakes entries for the Thomas & Thomas Avant II rod with Battenkill Disc Reel and Scientific Anglers fly line will close at the dinner, but the prize winner will not be announced until Wednesday, March 25th, due to PA gaming regulations.

Everyone has a vision for Rockview - what's yours?

Elizabeth Crisfield will discuss the wide range of factors being considered by many stakeholders. The potential development of the Rockview property presents both opportunities and threats for natural resources, including Spring Creek. Elizabeth will discuss opportunities for reforestation and agricultural preservation along with the potential hydrologic threats arising from increasing impervious surface in the watershed and increased water use.

Elizabeth is the Executive Director of ClearWater Conservancy. Elizabeth holds a PhD in biogeography, an M.S. in soil physics, and a B.S. in physics and she has been working in conservation for 25 years. She is the daughter of an avid fly-fisherman who spent all winter at his fly-tying desk dreaming of the headwaters creeks in the Catskills where he loved to wade.

As you think about Spring Creek, how do you see the quantity, quality, timing, and temperature of its inflows shaping the conditions for trout and other species—and how close do you think we are to the edge of what those species can tolerate?

Get ready for a fun, fast-paced fly-tying showdown! Join us for Charney’s “Chopped: Fly Tying”, now named in honor of the late Dennis Charney, a major supporter of our chapter and this beloved event.

How it works:
Test your creativity and skills through three exciting rounds of competition. In each round, tiers receive a mystery bag of materials and must tie a fly using only what’s provided. After each round, an esteemed panel of celebrity judges will select the winners.

Celebrity Judge Spotlight:
We’re thrilled to announce that one of our celebrity judges is none other than fly-fishing legend Joe Humphreys!

Time & Place
Thursday, February 12th at 6:30pm
Happy Valley Brewing Company
137 Elmwood St.
State College, PA 16801

This is a FREE event!
To compete, please RSVP to: rnovak2016@gmail.com

Important for participants:
Please bring your own vise and tools

Even if you don’t tie, this is a fantastic night to hang out, socialize, and enjoy the fly-fishing community. Don’t miss it!

Spring Creek Redd Count 2025: Make a Direct Impact on Local Trout and Citizen Science

Join us Sunday, November 23rd, 10:00 AM–3:00 PM at the Millbrook Marsh Marboe Pavilion (new location!!) for the annual Spring Creek Redd Count, a hands-on, high-impact day where volunteers survey and map trout redds (nests) that tell the story of our trout population and stream health. For more information on what a redd is, please visit our website here: Redd Count — Spring Creek Trout Unlimited

Why this matters

• Counting redds provides essential, long-term data used by scientists and the chapter to track spawning success, habitat condition, and population trends.

• Your participation supports real conservation decisions and strengthens community science that guides restoration and advocacy for Spring Creek.

• Every count adds to a dataset that helps protect a resource anglers, conservationists, and residents all depend on.

What to expect

• Team-based field surveying and mapping of redds along assigned stream sections.

• Short orientation and pairing for new volunteers; experienced counters may work independently.

• Food and drinks provided on-site.

• Waders provided upon request.

• Flexible option for experienced volunteers to complete counts during the week before or after the event if scheduling is tighter.

How to sign up

Please RSVP by clicking the ticket button (TICKET IS FREE) and answer the three questions provided in the questionnaire. If you have a friend/family member coming that won't be signing up, please select the number of tickets that match the number of people coming with you. On the post ticket questionnaire, please add their name and answer the 3 questions about them. If you have any further questions, please email reddcount@springcreektu.org

Final note

Bring friends, family, or fellow anglers! We welcome new faces and returning volunteers alike. Your boots-on-the-groundwork turns observations into action for Spring Creek’s trout and habitat.
